My Secret World DVD back on sale

Sarah Records Posted on January 26, 2016 by MattJanuary 26, 2016

Posted on 26th January, 2016

Just a quick post to let you know that the DVD of My Secret World is now back in stock, complete with 85 minutes of extra material, a “making-of” booklet, a badge and a balloon. You can order copies directly from Lucy HERE – it’s £14 plus p&p (p&p will depend on whether you want her to blow the balloon up for you or leave it flaccid).

These were our lives

Sarah Records Posted on December 2, 2015 by MattDecember 3, 2015

Posted on 2nd December, 2015

The DVD of My Secret World has, I’ve just discovered, now sold out. Which is both good news and bad news, depending on who you are. Lucy is contemplating making some more in the New Year – albeit in a more basic version, without the postcards and whatnot – but will only do so if she thinks there’s a big enough demand. So, if you’re one of those people who didn’t get your act together last month, it probably makes sense to drop her a line and register your interest. You can do that here. If, on the other hand, you can’t imagine why anyone would want to watch it twice, or you have some unwelcome relatives staying and think that playing it repeatedly over the space of a weekend might make the antipathy mutual, you can STREAM it: it costs £4 for 48 hours, or the exact opposite of a NCP car park in central London.

Those of a more bookish bent should take note that stocks of Popkiss seem to be running low too, though again we have fingers crossed for a reprint. In the meantime, Bloomsbury are having a Christmas sale till 13th December, meaning you can get it for £10.19. Plus p&p, unless you’re ordering other stuff too (check out their 33 1/3 series – someone’s written a whole book about OK Computer… why would anyone do that?). Also, from 7th December, you’ll be able to buy eBook versions for £10.79 – again, that’s a sale price, but you can pre-order.

There And Back Again LaneAnd finally… if you’re slightly distrusting of the cool, even-handed, non-partisan and thoroughly objective approach to the label’s history taken by both book and film and would prefer something a bit more prejudiced, blinkered and skewed, then you might like to know that we’ve just uploaded the text from There And Back Again Lane (SARAH 100). It’s a 22-page 8MB pdf and you can find it here.

Book & DVD launch: Rough Trade East

Sarah Records Posted on September 28, 2015 by MattNovember 6, 2015

Posted on 5th November, 2015

A final reminder that tonight, Thursday 5th November, sees the launch of both Popkiss, Michael White’s fabulous book about Sarah, and also the DVD of My Secret World, Lucy Dawkins’ equally fabulous film about the label, which has extra minutes and postcards and other bits and bobs. We’ll be there (as will Lucy) doing a Q&A and taking questions from the floor or, if the drugs have worn off, from anyone who’s sitting or standing on it. And, just to clarify, you can just turn up – you don’t need to have pre-booked. Just don’t be late.

My Secret World DVD: now on sale

Sarah Records Posted on September 27, 2015 by MattNovember 6, 2015

Posted on 2nd November, 2015

My Secret World DVDThe DVD version of My Secret World is now available, with a poster, booklet, postcards and – apparently – over 85 minutes of extra content. Which hopefully means that Lucy’s reinstated the infamous Orchids/Blueboy beach volleyball match, Scott and Jamie from Secret Shine’s balloon animal demonstration, and maybe even Stewart Boyracer’s Cookery Corner – what that boy can do with a baked potato shocked even his own bandmates (if you’ve ever wondered about the line-up change between SARAH 85 and SARAH 96, there’s your answer). To find out, why not buy one here or – more excitingly – come along to Rough Trade East on Thursday 5th between 7pm and 9pm where copies will be on sale alongside copies of Michael White’s Popkiss as part of an evening of lavish entertainment with ourselves, Lucy and Alexis Petridis.

My Secret World DVDAs previously mentioned, Michael White’s wonderful Popkiss is being launched at Rough Trade East on 5th November. Just to add to the excitement, though, this event will now also see the launch of the DVD of My Secret World. There’ll be a Q&A/chat with our good selves and My Secret World director Lucy Dawkins, and I think we’ll be showing a bit of the film too.

So, that’s:

My Secret World: Brighton ticket update

Sarah Records Posted on May 16, 2015 by MattJune 26, 2015

Posted on 16th May, 2015

Just a quick note to say that online tickets for the Brighton screening of My Secret World on Friday, 26th June (with Q&A and live performance by The Catenary Wires) have now sold out, but you can still get actual physical tickets from Resident Music (28 Kensington Gardens, North Laine, Brighton, BN1 4AL). Once they’ve gone, though, I’m afraid your only options will be to burst into tears at the door or hide under someone’s coat, which won’t be easy if everyone’s wearing anoraks.

UPDATE: apparently a few tickets are being held back for sale on the door… but get there early!

My Secret World: Bristol, Rome, Brighton

Sarah Records Posted on May 12, 2015 by MattMay 12, 2015

Posted on 12th May, 2015

Just a quick reminder that there are two screenings of My Secret World this week. On Thursday (14th) it’s being shown at The Cube in BRISTOL (8pm, tickets £6), and there’ll be a Q&A afterwards, chaired by writer Jane Duffus, in which you can ask me all those things you’ve always wanted to know about running a small independent record label in Bristol a quarter of a century ago: was Revolver really as scary as people say, is it true you couldn’t buy a cupcake on Stokes Croft for love nor money, and who would have won in a fight between Mousefolk and the Driscolls? More details here and TICKETS HERE.

Also, it’s being shown TONIGHT at the Blackmarket Gallery in ROME. According to their website you have another 8 hours 12 minutes to buy tickets, and you can do that here.

And finally… it seems that tickets for the BRIGHTON screening on 26th June are almost sold out. Not sure if that’s a reflection on us (we’ll be doing a Q&A), Catenary Wires (who will be playing), the size of the venue or how nice the tickets are but, whichever it is (my money’s on all but the first), don’t say you haven’t been warned. Tickets from Resident Music or We Got Tickets.

My Secret World: London screening final words

Sarah Records Posted on April 11, 2015 by MattApril 11, 2015

Posted on 11th April, 2015

Just a final reminder that the London premiere of My Secret World takes place at 5 p.m. tomorrow, Sunday 12th April, at the Hackney Picturehouse, and has now been bumped up to the main screen, so tickets are still available! Pete Paphides will be hosting a Q&A with us immediately after and then Dickon Edwards (Shelley, Orlando, Fosca, himself) will be DJ-ing in the bar. Click here for tickets!

If your plan was to travel via Hackney Central, by the way, then leave a bit of extra time, as there are replacement buses on that bit of the Overground. But the Highbury-Shoreditch branch is running fine, so you could just go to Dalston Junction instead and walk up Graham Road. Hackney Downs and London Fields are both open normally too and, this being Hackney, there are more buses than you can shake a stick at.*

* DISCLAIMER: please do not shake sticks at buses as it confuses the drivers and can cause unnecessary delay to your journey.

My Secret World London Screening: more tickets released!

Sarah Records Posted on March 25, 2015 by MattApril 7, 2015

Posted on 25th March, 2015

Excellent news from the Hackney Picturehouse: they’ve just moved the Doc’n Roll screening of MY SECRET WORLD on Sunday, 12th April to Screen 1, just like it was Pirates of the Caribbean or The Hunger Games or something, which means there are now more tickets on sale and you can get them HERE and also pre-order popcorn buckets.

Don’t be confused, by the way, by the “TBC” in the main listing – that’s referring to something else entirely, and it definitely is all definite. Also, it’s not 123 minutes long, despite what it says; it’s actually slightly shorter than the original cut, as several scenes of nudity and mild peril have now been excised and, as mentioned elsewhere, Lucy needed to make it suitable for dogs. ALSO, as well as the Q&A with us and journalist Peter Paphides, there will be music in the bar afterwards with Dickon Edwards (Shelley/Orlando), a real live DJ. So you could just come to that and buy us a drink. But we’d rather you came to the film and asked us awkward questions. As long as they’re not about missing mail order.

My Secret World: New York (Jersey City) screening

Sarah Records Posted on February 10, 2015 by MattFebruary 10, 2015

Posted on 10th February, 2015

Just to update our previous post on this, My Secret World is getting its first U.S. screening on 17th April and this will also now include a Q&A afterwards with Clare. Full details below. I’ve just noticed, by the way, that the Brown Paper Tickets website says its not dog-friendly, so it might be worth me saying – in case anyone’s worried – that I’m pretty sure this refers to the cinema, not the film, as I know Lucy made several edits to comply with BBFC rules on what can and cannot be shown to dogs, and certainly none of the dogs who’ve seen it so far have raised objections; other than a dachshund called Eric who complained that there should have been more about Boyracer and that he couldn’t see the screen properly.

My Secret World: London ticket update & New York screening

Sarah Records Posted on February 7, 2015 by MattMarch 10, 2015

Posted on 7th February, 2015

The initial batch of tickets for the London screening (with Q&A) of My Secret World at the Hackney Picturehouse on 12th April has just sold out, but the film is being moved to a larger screen so more tickets should be on sale very soon, if they’re not already! Check here for details.

Also, a New York (or New Jersey, to be precise) screening has now been confirmed for 17th April, or April 17th as they say over there, at Monty Hall, 43 Montgomery Street, Jersey City, NJ 07302 at 8 p.m., presented by WFMU (a radio station) and DJ Trouble (a DJ). You can find out more and buy tickets here. They’re $8, which seems pretty decent.

Between Hello and Goodbye: a Reflection

Sarah Records Posted on May 6, 2014 by MattJanuary 6, 2015

Posted on 6th May, 2014

TVScreens

Over the course of the May bank holiday weekend, Bristol’s Arnolfini Gallery staged a series of events under the banner Between Hello and Goodbye: the Secret World of Sarah Records. An exhibition of Sarah artefacts (posters, artwork, demo tapes, photos, giant Saropolies…) was held in the main gallery space, Clare led guided walks each day around notable Sarah landmarks, and in the cinema on Saturday evening there was a preview screening of My Secret World (Lucy Dawkins’ wonderful new film about the label – see sidebar) and live performances by three bands – The Orchids, Secret Shine and Amelia, Rob and Pete from Heavenly – followed by dancing in the bar till the early hours courtesy of London’s How Does It Feel To Be Loved? club, relocated to the West Country for the night.

All in all, people seem to have enjoyed it, and we know there are loads of lovely Tweets and photos out there. While we’re still getting our heads round those, though, we’d just like to say a big thank you to everyone involved – to Lucy for making the film, to the bands for playing, to Axel, Al, Lucy, Mark, Anton and all the other Arnolfini staff for organising everything and putting up with our occasional cluelessness (with a special nod to all the gallery attendants who had to listen to There And Back Again Lane on loop for four days), to Ian for DJing… and, of course, to everyone who came, some of whom we’d not met since Sarah stopped, and some of whom we were meeting for the first time having written each other letters twenty-five years ago…

Our personal Top Ten moments? It’s impossible to choose but, off the top of our heads, I don’t think we’ll ever forget:

  • Julian Henry, aka The Hit Parade, appearing on the hour, every hour, like a indiepop cuckoo clock, to play both sides of SARAH 58 (sadly not dressed in a large SARAH 58 sleeve as we’d hoped, but you can’t have everything).
  • Giant Saropolies and giant dice in 12″ single bags, yay!
  • Pete joining Amelia and Rob onstage and Shallow bringing back memories of seeing Heavenly for the first time back at the Camden Falcon in 1989 (whilst knowing deep down that those new songs they played might be the best things they’ve written).
  • A grandfather and his eight-year-old grandson draped in headphones and intently watching the Golden Dawn video in an otherwise empty gallery.
  • The chorus of Something For The Longing sounding like the biggest thing in the world, and Mr Hackett’s world-weary slapstick routine with his unruly lyric crib sheets (imagine The Tommy Cooper Story starring Tony Hancock and for some reason set in Glasgow).
  • The look on people’s faces when explaining to them that Stewart Boyracer is dressed as a cowboy in the film not because he’s the world’s biggest poser but because he’s a cowboy. No, really, he is.
  • The gallery attendant turning up the volume for the last half hour then dancing to English Rain and Temporal with Snoozy from the bookshop.
  • The three chefs by the bins round the back of Jamie’s Italian (which used to be George’s Bookshop) having a fag while watching in bemusement as fifty-six people photograph the There And Back Again Lane street sign on Saturday’s walking tour.
  • Secret Shine announcing they’d begin their set with “not one of our own songs” and then playing a note-perfect Pristine Christine – and hats off to Kathryn for doing the whole show in a bright-red plaster cast after tripping and breaking her leg (on the plus side, hopefully this will lay those old shoegazing accusations to rest, as she clearly hadn’t been…).
  • The woman leading her elderly mother from the gallery on Friday morning saying “I’m sorry, but I really didn’t understand what any of that was”.

And now here are some more photos (all taken by Lucy Munro).

Typewriter

This typewriter cost £22.50 from W.H. Smith’s in Broadmead in 1985 and all the early fanzines and leaflets were written on it. It wasn’t meant to be an interactive exhibit, but teenagers in particular seemed unable to resist the idea of a computer you needed to hit.

Blurb

The Arnolfini kindly provided a handy wall-mounted history of Sarah Records for anyone who’d wandered in off the quayside looking for the toilets, or wandered out of the exhibition looking for an explanation.

GreenRoom

Due to a slight misunderstanding, this room was entirely full of fresh flowers, kittens, blue Smarties and pictures of Mariah Carey.

Guitar

Sarah 58, A and B sides, performed on the hour every hour by Julian from The Hit Parade; sadly the man-size glass vitrine didn’t arrive in time.

Bookshop

For those confused by the exhibition, a small guide was available from the bookshop; and, if that didn’t help, a wide range of books on other topics.

Projectors

Two small oblongs of white light projected onto the wall just inside the entrance proved especially popular.

StageTimes

Stage times from the green room. We’d like to thank The Doors for agreeing to go on first, and hope they got back safely to L.A.

ArnolfiniWindowPoster

The Arnolfini attempted to lure anyone walking down Narrow Quay into the exhibition with photos of the cranes directly opposite and a signpost showing the way to Yate.

ArnolfiniWindow

Seeing a giant Saropoly board on public display in the window of the Arnolfini facing Prince Street bridge may well be our proudest moment.

LightSwitch

The exhibition introduced Sarah Records to a whole new generation of pop fans, several of whom responded by repeatedly hitting the large switch on the wall in the hope the horrid music would stop and it would all go dark.

And some more photos…

Between Hello and Goodbye: the Secret World of Sarah Records

Sarah Records Posted on April 27, 2014 by MattJanuary 13, 2015

Posted on 27th April, 2014

BetweenHelloNext weekend (2nd-5th May), there’s a four-day exhibition at the Arnolfini Gallery in Bristol presenting various artefacts from our eight years running the label – artwork, posters, tapes, fanzines, records and so forth. It’s free, and runs 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. The Saturday will also feature a preview screening of My Secret World, Lucy Dawkins’ film about the label, and performances by The Orchids, Secret Shine and Amelia and Rob from Heavenly – tickets for that are £18. There’s also a Q&A with us, and Clare will be leading walking tours of various Sarah landmarks on the Saturday, Sunday and Monday – that’s all free, like the exhibition, and the whole thing is part of the Bristol Art Weekender, and you can find out more details here.

Sarah was a Bristol-based independent record label, active between November 1987 and August 1995. This site was launched in 2015 to archive photos, press, posters and other artefacts; it’s a work in progress.
